Outreach and Public Service

Borrowing the name of the Roman goddess of agriculture and the harvest, the Ceres® Forum began in 1989 as an occasional series of symposia ranging from topics such as, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) to health claims on food labels.

In 1992, the late Dr. Gerald Gaull—the founder and first director of the Ceres® Forum—was provided seed money from various sources to bring the Ceres Forum to Georgetown University and Washington, D.C. This established a neutral educational platform to improve understanding in food and nutrition policy by providing continuing, direct, and off-the-record discussion between leaders of the global food systems and leaders of the public sector affecting its operation. The Ceres Forums, Roundtables, and Workshops convene scientists, government policymakers, industry, advocacy groups, and other stakeholders to discuss oftentimes contentious issues in food and nutrition policy.
